There are probably a lot of villages and cities I haven’t visit in my country yet. And to be honest, I don’t really want to discover whole Belgium. Must be a big shock when you read the title of this article: Why You Must Visit Belgium. But I’m not going to deny that this country has a past. Just as I’m not going to deny that you probably know Belgium by its famous French fries or Brussels Waffles. Believe it or not, Belgium has a lot to offer. If you like relaxation and nature or to party and to drink. We have it all for you. So do you like to know why you must come to Belgium? Read on!
Food & Beverage
Fries – Chocolate – Belgian Beer – Brussels Waffles
Ah, the Belgian fries. Who comes to Belgium, has to eat this. It’s like a MUST in this country. There was a whole fuss around these fries about the originality: France (French Fries) or Belgium (Belgian Fries?). I’d like to call myself a one and only Belgian woman, so if you ask me, I’d give you the answer that they’re originally from Belgium and that Belgian Fries are more tastier than any other fries. But it varies from person to person which taste you like best. Chocolate is also a famous product of Belgium, just like the Belgian beer (Duvel and Stella Artois) and the Brussels Waffles.
Waterloo – Flanders Fields
Did you know that my country is the land of wars? Not that Belgium fought many wars with other countries, but there were many wars based on Belgian territory. For example the Battle Of Waterloo with Napoleon Bonaparte where France fought against the Seventh Coalition. I will refresh your memory: France lost this battle in Waterloo. But also a part of the first World War took place in Belgium. More specified in Flanders Fields. So if you’re entirely into History, then Belgium is the place to be. But if you don’t like the history of wars, then don’t worry: my country welcomed a baby named Adolphe Sax in Dinant. He’s the inventor of the saxophone.
Caves of Han
If you prefer walking around with trees all around you, then the park of Han is your place to go. It’s at a place called Han-Sur-Lesse and has besides its caves a large park where there are wild animals like wolves, wild boars, wild cats, etc. But if you’d really like the whole Han-Sur-Less experience you must visit the caves. To reach these caves and the park next to it, you have to take a historical cable car that rides to points where you can jump in to walk in the park or the entree of the caves.
Belgium has besides the green nature, many beaches. In Flemish, it’s called ‘De Belgische Kust’. We have a place at the beach and it’s very peaceful and quiet there. But if you want my advice: Knokke, Blankenberge, Bredene and Ostend are the most beautiful beaches of Belgium (in my opinion).
The Belgian Ardennes… That place deserves a capital letter. You’ll find hills, high trees, wooden chalets, etc. Long story short; it’s also very quiet here. Dinant, Durbuy and Han-Sur-Lesse are great places in the Ardennes by the way!
Evenements + Festivals
Tomorrowland – Rock Werchter – Pukkelpop – Laundry Day
Yes, there’s something for everyone. And that means there are also evenements and festivals you can go to. Tomorrowland is one of the most famous outdoor-dance festival in this country. It’s located at Antwerp, Boom. And even though I have never been to Tomorrowland before, mostly because it sells out in no-time, it appears to be one of the best festivals in the world. Also famous in Belgium: Rock Werchter, Pukkelpop and Laundry Day.
Carnaval in Aalst
No Rio De Janeiro and the famous Copacabana beach here, but you’ll find the craziest party in Aalst (Carnaval). For someone who likes to dress up like a crazy person and party a lot, you should consider going to Aalst when it’s carnaval.
